A few days ago, I was having lunch with a former colleague. After a great lunch, the time came to pay the bill. We paid and both went our separate ways. When driving to my next appointment, I suddenly felt a strange gut feeling.
I felt that something was wrong with the amount we had paid.
When I arrived at my next appointment, I had a bit of spare time to check in with my gut feeling. According to my gut, the total amount was more than I had expected it to be, so it told me that I needed to check the bill.
I reviewed the bill and concluded that we had paid 25% more than what we had enjoyed. I called the restaurant and they corrected their mistake, without hesitation.
My gut was quicker than my mind in sensing that something was inaccurate.
When reflecting upon this, I found this very interesting; my gut was quicker than my mind in sensing that something was inaccurate. I felt that something was wrong and I initially didn’t take a moment to pause for myself. When I did pause, I allowed my gut and head to become in sync.
So, what will this bring me going forward?
Next time my gut feeling is off, I will slow down immediately and take the time to check in and connect my gut to my head. This will bring both of them into sync and allow me to make a (more) conscious decision on what do I want with it. For example, I might want to ask for clarification or decide to not buy or do something. This can be in little things, like paying for a lunch, or in big things, like managing an immense project or maintaining the relationship with your partner or best friend.
When was the last time you checked in with your gut?
