Last weekend I visited the south of Spain with my family for a long weekend at the sunny beach and in a beautiful city (Malaga). Once we arrived at the apartment, I visited the local supermarket to buy some groceries.

Prices in the supermarket are significantly lower, compared to the supermarkets in the Netherlands. Take for example a bottle of water. In the Netherlands, the price of 1 liter water is approximately 5 times the price of a liter water in a supermarket in Malaga (for a regular house brand).

I didn’t spend much more thought on these price differences until we flew back home.

In the airplane, the price of a liter water had increased significantly more. The price was almost 8 times more than in the Dutch supermarket (note: this time a premium brand).

The value of something is determined by the place where it is presented.

So, the price of a liter water changes. Just like the price of alcohol, cigarettes, food etc. Nothing special here.

What is the major influence on the price of any product?

It is the place (the location, the context) where it (the product or service) is presented. Products online are typically significantly cheaper online than in a physical store. Tax for motorized vehicles is different per province in the Netherlands. Petrol at a gas station is much more expensive along the highway than in a town along the road.

So what is my take-away of this going forward?

I believe that what holds for products or services, holds for human beings as well. We need to find a place where we are valued, where growth comes seamlessly; a prolific place.

A place where we are at our best and are valued as such.

A place where we are building and expanding on our strengths, rather than mitigating our weaknesses. A place where we are valued wholeheartedly with everything we bring to the table.
