I recently attended a multi-day event where the main speaker was an international well-known and motivational speaker.
To my surprise, it was announced upfront that the main speaker could be going over his time limit. To my bigger surprise, he actually DID take more time than was planned for.
From my initial perspective, with my experience on time management, my first reaction was, “this is really not OK…”
I then started reflecting from another perspective, to find what results have emerged because of the way that the speaker managed everybody’s energy. I realized that managing time is very different from managing energy.
Time is a finite resource, one which cannot be saved or refueled. You can start working longer hours to match the increasing demands in your work life. Inevitably this will lead to a breaking point; the longer working hours start to leave a mark on you, physically, emotionally or mentally.
Managing time is very different
from managing energy.
Energy on the other hand is different; you can save your energy, you can refuel it and you can even expand your energy. I realized that by focusing more on energy, I could experience more joy and productivity simultaneously.
This is exactly what happened in that multi-day event; I really loved the performance by the main speaker and was very much energized from it (although it took more time than expected).
So what is my take-away of this going forward?
The next time I plan and go into an appointment, I will ask myself “how can I manage the energy so that it is mutually beneficial?” Regardless of where you will focus upon, refueling, expanding or saving energy, make sure that your partner in conversation has the same focus by crystalizing this upfront.
As a bonus one for myself, I’ll strive to manage the energy in such a way that we will meet the scheduled time.
When was the last time you focused on energy?
