Unless you have been living under a rock, you must have heard about the war in Europe…

I never imagined I would live to see this; a country that invades a neighboring country on the European continent.

For me, no good can come from a war, because in war there are no winners; there is just one side that has less casualties than the other side.

In the past few days, one single thing that stood out for me in a very positive way.

That is Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

Originally trained as actor, known in Ukraine for his role in the comedy series ‘Servant of the people’, Zelensky became the president of Ukraine in May 2019.

Since the Russian invasion on February 24th, Zelensky went from leader of his country to wartime leader.

For me, Zelensky is the perfect example of true leadership, standing up whenever the country needs him most.

He does whatever is needed to bring this war to an end. From defending his country, to calling on Russian people and sending a delegation for peace talks. He communicates straightforward and consistently and enables others to understand what they are fighting for each day. He is creating the environment where Ukrainians want to live in and fight for.

And that’s exactly what true leaders do; they are a thermostat (not a thermometer). The latter only reads the temperature, while the former does everything needed to adjust the temperature to where it needs to be.

True leaders understand that their impact is linked to the environment and temperature that they create. They act and react with calm, focused and determined leadership. True leaders are setting the tone for themselves and for their followers, especially in tough times. And that is why, for me, the leadership of Zelensky is the only positive note of this war (so far).

To close; my thoughts and prayers go out to the Ukrainian people, and to the Russian people who stand up against the person pushing the buttons.
