The definition of true connection was re-emphasized to me on two occasions recently.
A few weeks ago, we welcomed our 3rd daughter to this world. This re-started the whole bottle-feeding process again for me. One of the beautiful things of that bottle-feeding process is the definition of true connection.
Most babies belch after finishing the bottle, since air bubbles have become trapped in their tummy and cause discomfort. As a father, I feel strongly connected to the little one. So much so, that our connection releases chemicals which make me belch as well. I find this fascinating, since our connection triggers something which is otherwise not there.
“I am because we are”
On the other side of life’s spectrum, I also had an encounter regarding true connection. For several days, I had been thinking about an old acquaintance. He was a seasoned entrepreneur, who had built and sold a national food imperium, for who I had worked for.
For some reason, his name kept coming back so I decided to contact him again. The exact day that I wanted to contact him, I read the sad message that he passed away the night before. While the news was heartbreaking, the definition of true connection was yet again re-emphasized to me.
What is my take-away here?
These outliers of life, birth and death, highlighted the definition of true connection to me once again. I believe it was not coincidence that I had to think of this old acquaintance, it’s also no coincidence that I belch just before my daughter. It showed me again that we are all interconnected in some way and everything has a place in our universe.
An African philosophy called Ubuntu, best described the interconnectedness of us all by saying: “I am because we are”.
