On the road to any goal, obstacles are inevitable.
Typically, character skills alone are not enough to overcome these obstacles. New skills need to be developed to achieve the gold medal, let alone to stand on the Olympic podium. Unfortunately, many new skills donโt come with a manual. In particular the skills for which a manual is most needed, like parenting or leadership.
With no silver bullet available, the best practice to reach unprecedented heights comes in the form of ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ณ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด: a temporary support structure that enables us to excel.
Scaffolding helps to build the resilience to overcome obstacles that threaten to overwhelm us and limit our growth. Without scaffolding, even the most promising athlete can lose their footing. Whether in sport, parenting, or leadership, scaffolding isnโt a weakness. Itโs strategic strength. Itโs what you put in place when youโre serious about going beyond where youโve been.
To elevate my skills, I scaffolded my competencies by obtaining the Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coaching Certification.
Scaffolding: a temporary support structure that enables us to excel.
For business owners and senior corporate leaders, the most common form of having a temporary support structure nowadays is coaching.
Unfortunately, 1:1 coaching is not enough anymore. Why not?
- 1:1 Coaching is centered on the internal experience of the leader
- 1:1 Coaching typically prioritizes insight over impact
- 1:1 Coaching is not built to scale, prove or sustain change
Peter Drucker already said it some decades ago โleadership is not a business function, it is a social functionโ.
In other words, leadership is defined externally, not internally. It is not defined by the leaderโs intentions but by the experience of others. The effectiveness of the leader lies in the ripple effect it creates, measured in engagement, retention and strategic results.
Hence, the golden standard in executive coaching is a scaffold of deliberate practices which:
- Drives real-world improvements with a clear and measurable ROI
- Takes into account the experience of the leadersโ most important stakeholders
- Builds trust by changing transparently
