A little bit over 5 years ago, I started with it:
Journaling:
Reflecting back over the past period to identify:
- What did I set out to do?
- What happened?
- What do I learn from this going forward?
Every week, typically on Sunday, I write down my reflections of the past week and inquire new learning points for myself to take-away for the future. By writing my thoughts and emotions, I am better able to understand and address them.
Two years ago, I added 2 element to the concept of journaling during the Coach Potential Program. Firstly, I learned the importance of keeping a positive mindset, and how to reinforce this by writing daily acknowledgements. Second of all, I learned to appreciate receiving questions about my weekly journal. This steepened the learning curve and served as an accountability partner to convert my learnings into action.
“The game of life is perceived wider from the stands than from the pitch”
After finalizing the coaching program, I decided to continue with daily acknowledgements and weekly questions concerning my journal. Hence, I teamed up with Niels, former head coach of the Belgium Red Panthers, to continue our journaling journey.
Ever since then we meet on a weekly basis to reflect over the past period. We ask each other powerful and deep questions which typically lead to meaningful conversations. These conversations help to improve my reflection by:
- Expanding my perspective
- Building the courage muscle to have these kind of conversations
- And strengthen the foundation to take action on those reflections
At times, we also meet face-2-face if there is a need for deeper reflection. Yesterday was one of those moments where we engaged in deeper and courageous conversations. Like always, the outcome differs from my expectation and exceeds my ambition at the same time.
I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate these journaling sessions, which has become one of the thriving systems in my success environment (more about that here).
What is your system to expand your perspective and build your courage muscle?
