Our life is mostly built on habits and routines. Scientific research indicates that 45% of our behavior is repeated almost every day. We are relying on habits, because they allow us to do multiple things simultaneously, thus saving us time and energy.

These habits are automations of behavior that we have built over a longer period of time, and have become ingrained in our daily life. Changing habits is therefore not easy to do. People tend to change habits most easily during a major life event; marriage, divorce, new house or birth.

Bad habits are easy to form and hard to live with. Good habits are hard to form and easy to live with.

There are 3 secrets to building good habits and breaking bad habits:

  • If you are looking to build new habits, find a habit you already do each day and add the new behavior on top of it. Your old habit will become the trigger for your new one. For example, after you lay down in bed for the night, you’ll visualize your ideal version of tomorrow.
  • If you want to break a bad habit, make them invisible, unattractive, difficult, unsatisfying or all of them. For example, if you want to stop instantly checking your email at every pop-up notification, disable your email notifications, close your email window fully (and log out if needed).
  • Location has energy, timing has memory: If you want to build a habit, then make sure you always do it at the same location and same timeslot.
