Recently, I said ‘no’ to a major customer.

As a full-time entrepreneur in my second year, turning down a major customer was not something I took lightly.

After I was approached by this customer, I felt fantastic. Shots of dopamine were released in my body, since this assignment could significantly help me in achieving my goals.

I also felt a sense of pride, which was triggered by a release of serotonin in my body. My confidence went up, since I was asked for this major assignment.

When the chemicals in my body were burned, I reviewed the request for this assignment more thoroughly. There were a lot of potential future perks, however the immediate value for me was limited.

Poor business is not having no business, poor business is having bad business

This triggered doubt, so I decided to consult with my success environment to gain additional perspectives. A success environment is a place where we feel safe, where we are valued wholeheartedly and where we are challenged to be the best version of ourselves. Unanimously, my success environment advised me to seek for a better proposal from this major customer. One of my mentors, Paul Rulkens, give the pivotal push to seek a better proposal. He said “poor business is not having no business, poor business is having bad business”. This is what I call ‘The Power of No Business’.

I went back to this major customer to talk about an improved assignment with this major customer. Unfortunately, the customer thought otherwise and claimed this was the best proposal that could be made. We agreed to disagree, shook hands and went our own way.

What is my take-away here?

The most important one for me is that we all should know our value. When you know your value, you know the bandwidth in which you operate. The challenge is to stick within that bandwidth and definitely do not come below that. Once you enter the area of opportunity below your bandwidth, it is extremely difficult to re-enter that area on the desired level again. The Power of No Business keeps your agenda open for an opportunity within your bandwidth of value.
